I had a 1977 American Standard J Bass for 35 years; as a guitarist I needed 4 strings for recording & it sounded great. I even played it in a folk rock band [a personal goal to play bass for 3 sets].
After someone told me of it's resale value, I sold it for $2k+, got a nice Martin & picked up this Squire Reissue for under 3 Bones.
The neck feels like my '77 & it's like an old friend. The body is about 20% lighter, but that's fine with me. The pickups are alright, but I may swap out the bridge PU. They got pretty darn close in this reissue.

.I'm 50 years old. I've been playing for 32 years. I've had all the basses from a real 77 Fender P-Bass to American Jazz, Schecter Model T Jazz, Music Man, etc. The last several years I've put more money into home studio and wound up selling all of my expensive basses after purchasing a Vintage Modified Jazz about 4 years ago. I'm not saying they all will be this great, but I play as many as I can and find those gems. This one is a gem. Great wood. Great balance. No way was I going to return this for another. Took it to a custom shop and they were amazed at how "lucky" I got. They also said this series is the only one they see from Fender that is worth the money. So...play-ability is awesome. Felt great out of the box. Just needed a pro setup. I then had them change out the pots+bridge+cap (75 for all including setup). It completely blows away anything I've ever played that was American made. I was going to change pickups, but these sounded great after the new Cap and pots. So, leaving it a lone for now. Played live with it last week and had many comments from other musicians about how great it sounded. Play these! Give them a shot! You could find "the one" within the first two or 3 you might pull off the wall. Throw 100 at it and you'll be glad you did. To get rid of the stereo-type of absent-minded purists...I'm having fun with making it a bit vintage looking...including sanding the head stock down to remove the decals and see how many people ask what year it is? Seriously, take some time at a store that has a vintage or custom shop Fender Jazz...then a USA...then this one (or any Vintage Modified comparison from Squier as they are all great) and tell me it's worth 600 more cash to your ears. It's all in your fingers and soul.

.I had a real 77 once. It played awful. This was a good cheap way to add a maple neck round wound strung bass to my flat wound strung collection of Fenders. It came very poorly set up like most stuff. I adjusted the neck relief, filed the nut slots down etc., added an old quan bridge I had in my parts drawer and set the radius and height, kept the strings because I like them so bought another set of fender 7250's, then I had my luthier dress the frets ( i like very low action)and voila! It plays and sounds better than my old original 77. btw the body wood is agathis which is mahogany so don't shy away from it because of that.

.I have 12 basses - all the way from high end G&L USA made basses through high end Ibanez and Peavey basses. I've owned the USA version of this back in the 80s. Once I bought this bass those high end basses stay home - I have been taking this Squire VM and a Squire VM shortscale Jag to gigs instead. They sound great. They have great necks. They are really light - a plus on 90 minute sets. And you don't worry that they might be stolen or damaged. Great gear for working musicians

.I was very excited for this bass I ordered it after I sent back a squire vintage modified precision V. I was very disappointed when I received this the neck was barely attached to the body. All of the screw holes were drilled too big and at wierd angles the agathis body is extremely light and has an airy empty tone to it it is so light that the bass is neck heavy. It has no balance which makes it very hard to play. That being said the neck feels amazing and the electronics are very nice. If I were to buy this again I would order the 70's jazz and not the 77 as it has a maple body.

.this is a great bass for the money, only complaint is body is 3/8 inch thinner than Fender makes for less sustain. good pro and reason I bought it is 9.5" radius neck with white binding and inlays. not available from Fender. i put the pearl pickguard, vintage keys and Fender decal so it looks just like the Gedfathers from the time machine tour. completely happy

.It's been my experience that Fender basses record very easily. I was tired of borrowing a Fender Jazz bass from a friend, so I picked up this Squier version for 255 on black friday. It looks great, it plays great & even a simple d.i. for recording gives me a really solid sound. I have small hands, but the neck on this is comfortable. Fit and finish are high quality, except for a bit of extra glue at the nut, no biggie, though. I would recommend this bass to anyone. It sounds just as good to me as the Fender version, for 255!!!

.Purchased for my husband. He says the bass guitar is very light. He says the neck is very playable.
There is some fret buzz but not too bad. This guitar was purchased because of the reviews that we read.
My husband is going to use this bass with his church band.

.Bought this bass guitar based on other comments made about it. It came ready to go except it needed
tuning. There wasn't anything to file and the neck was screwed on in good fashion. There was no glue on the nut either. I am not going to get a set-up on the bass guitar as it played great out of the box.
Squire did a good job with this bass. I was not too surprised as the other comments made gave the bass a good rating. Oh yea, the bass is very light and that will come in handy when I use it with my church band.
