I would definitely recommend this guitar to anybody who has a serious interest in music and playing guitar. The price is the only reason I would be against it for a beginner, but that does not mean it is not a beginner's guitar. In fact, I wish I had this guitar as a beginner becasue of the sound quality and the soft string pressure. Overall, this is my favorite steel string acoustic/electric guitar.
Unique sound hole placement, built in tuner (Not the best aestheticlly, but hey, it's a tuner), and more. Love them all.
I'm usually not a big fan of steel string guitars, but this guitar is MORE than an exception. The type of wood used for the neck allows smooth transitions. Also, the body attracts very little dust which is easily solved by any cloth. Paired with the D'addario strings that come with the guitar creates one of the best sounds from a guitar I've heard. The best thing I personally love about the guitar is that the string pressure causes very little irritation on the fingertips.
The cost is a little steep, especially for a beginner. However, one can argue that the quality and functionality of the piece evens it out a bit.

.Overall, its a very nice, albeit not spectacular, guitar. Given the odd shape, a case should be a standard (included) feature, and it seems to me the factory set-up of the action should, if not be perfect, be too high rather than too low. But with those caveats, it strikes me as a real nice instrument that I suspect I'll enjoy for years. And I haven't tried out the electronics, but those are well reviewed by others, so that should be a nice feature. And the onboard tuner is an excellent feature.
This Ovation is a nice choice for a player like myself that plays electric 95% of the time, but who wants an acoustic to play around with that is easy to play. The dimensions of the neck feel the same as my Telecaster. The cut-away allows me to easily reach to the 12th fret and beyond. I haven't plugged it in yet, but I've already found the onboard tuner to be a wonderful feature. The contoured body is comfortable, although given its shape, it's a little too deep to fit in any of my existing acoustic guitar cases, so I need to buy a new case.
It is a very nice, albeit very plain, looking guitar. No scratches or any obvious defects. The only problem is that the factory-set action is too low, so I have a lot of buzzes. I actually expected to need to do a set-up on it, but I thought the factory action would be too high, and I would simply need to remove some of the shims that Ovation factory installs. But it looks like I may need to add shims, which aren't provided. A more skilled luthier could probably handle this themselves, but I think I'll need to hire someone, which I didn't consider in my price shopping. Otherwise, I can't identify any problems with quality (although as noted earlier, I haven't tested the electronics yet).
I can say that it sounds at least as good, if not better, than the others in the price range, and it certainly plays as well. I played a few Taylors for twice the money that didn't seem any better in terms of sound or ease of play. Given the plain, black exterior and lack of fret inlays, I think Ovation decided to focus on the quality and save money on the appearance; for me, that's a good trade-off. Every place I looked was selling this at the same price.

.If you set then get an Ovation with a contoured bowl like this model. Good acoustic sound unplugged (Not like a Martin or Taylor) but this not its purpose. Super easy to keep clean. If you purchase take it to a pro who can adjust the saddle and you should be good to go.

. What a great deal! This really is a nice guitar. I've owned mine now for a few months and I love it. I play mostly electric, but the time spent with the 1778 is very enjoyable. I would highly recomend it.

.I love this guitar, I have 12 including J200, J160E, Martins and Fender. This is perfect for our band THE ROCKITS. And the case is strong, it fell out of the Lexus, onto concrete on my 2nd gig, no damage.
