Product Description

Hollowbody guitars are typically lighter and more resonant than their solidbody counterparts. This gives a somewhat mellower tone to the guitar making it well-suited to jazz, blues or rock. With its deep hollowbody the HB15 Hollowbody Mini-Humbucker Electric Guitar is perfect for traditional jazz and swing. It features a mahogany body and top with bound f-holes and multi-laminate binding. The scale is a comfortable 24-3/4" and the neck has a rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays. Traditional appointments include an adjustable rosewood bridge, a trapeze tailpiece and a raised pickguard. A single mini-humbucker delivers pure jazz tone with volume and tone controls. Gig bag included.

Well, I have the non cutaway model the HB15 which I like very much. This model should be labeled as the HB15C. MF has it listed without the C. The non cutaway model is much shallower than the cutaway. Very comfortable to play. The pickup on the non cutaway is very nice and balanced. On the hot side. But this isn't a review of the guitar I already had.

Be aware that the pics do not accurately show how thick the HB15C is. It has a large body. Much fatter than the HB15. It feels like a jumbo. It's big. I wasn't expecting that. I was expecting a cutaway on the same body as the non cutaway model. Did I mention it was big? While that isn't necessarily a deal breaker, it's cumbersome. Tone is pure jazz, although the pickup isn't at all like the HB15 I already had. Much weaker and very thin sounding. Playability isn't bad as far as how the neck feels in your hand. But again, it's a bit unwieldy. Finish was fine, no complaints. Frets are done nicely. The pots were totally loose and needed tightening. They don't seem to have the same sweep and travel that that the ones on my original HB15 had. In other words, there seems to be cheaper electronics in this cutaway model. The pickup is a floater and not bracketed to the neck extension like the other model. If you take the pick guard off, there is nothing holding the pickup down. Tuners and trapeze tailpiece are solid. 18/1 Grovers. Nothing wrong there. The Strap button isn't on the upper bout on this cutaway model. It is on the one I had. Never liked strap buttons on the heel. I just don't.

Ok, so I had the non cutaway model and like it very much. Wished it had a cutaway to get to the upper register. Saw this and said why not. Well, the folks at Washburn did not simply take the same guitar and add a cutaway as you would expect. Why you ask?!? No freakin' idea. The HB15C, in my professional opinion as an inferior instrument to it's predecessor the HB15. The body is much larger, the pickup is weaker, and it just doesn't feel as "solid" as the original non cutaway model. It does have a vintage jazzy feel and with enough tweaking you can get a usable tone out of it, but it takes some coaxing to get it there. I would not use this guitar at a gig (although I did play it at a gig once. ONCE!). It gets uncomfortable to play sitting down after a while and forget about standing with it. Looks like you're playing a mariachi bass.

If you really want this style of instrument and that vintage look and feel, may I recommend the Loar line of archtops.

.its not bad at all but really good:)
Washburn HB15 Hollowbody Mini-Humbucker Electric Guitar Sunburst
.pretty solid guitar. needs a good set up before playing. when dealing with a floating bridge, you need a good set up. I changed the strings to a good stainless steel flatwound set. Now i get that nice warm jazz sound. with only one pickup on the guitar, it helps if you can eq to get your sound. some people expect a certain sound from an instrument right out of the box. after a good set up, string change, and setting the eq ( bass, mid range, treble) you can get a pretty good sound.Don't knock these lower end priced guitars. there are some pretty good instruments coming out of the orient nowadays.. I enjoy mine. and after some discounts president day sale and if you have any backstage points to spend, you can pick these up relatively inexpensive.
