The Electro-Harmonix Ring Thing is a single sideband modulator, presenting state-of-the-art modulation control to allow the user to explore a new sonic world that's both familiar and inventive. Complex modulations with interactive parameters create any sound your mind can imagine. From metallic sweeps to subtle color changes to unique and limitless modulations, the Electro-Harmonix Ring Thing effects pedal will become your sonic dream machine.
Articulate pitch shifting, preset tuning, selectable waveforms and external control delivers sound designer mystery, with a Rock and Roll edge.
The EHX Ring Thing effect pedal has four selectable modes that use either frequency or pitch shift modulation: Ring Modulation, Side Modulation, Single Sideband-Upper Band, Single Sideband-Lower Band, and Pitch Shift. The ring modulator section builds upon the original EHX Frequency Analyzer, adding to it selectable carrier waveforms, sweepable filter, presets, and expression pedal control. Single-sideband modulation is a new effect based on ring modulation but with only one band present, making it a more harmonious effect. Finally, EHX added a powerful modulatable pitch shifter to this guitar pedal that can do detune effects, vibrato, chorus, transpose, or even whammy when you use an external expression pedal.
Some possible samples and settings you can create with the EHX Ring Thing:
Vibe-A-Tone: a control setting that produces a chorus/tremolo/vibrato effect
Baritone guitar: thanks to pristine polyphonic pitch shifting, you can transform a standard tuned guitar into a baritone guitar or a 6-string bass
Drop tuning with distortion: dropping a regularly tuned guitar down to B with the EHX Ring Thing and adding a distortion pedal afterwards produces a huge sound
Tremolo bar effects: adding an expression foot pedal to the Electro-Harmonix Ring Thing produces classic dive-bomb effects using any electric guitar
The Ring Thing guitar pedal set for two octaves above with an expression foot pedal produces contemporary pitch pedal effects
Tunable moving harmony: pressing the tune switch while holding a not automatically tunes the Ring Thing to your guitar
Ring modulator you can play musically: all parameters including the tuning can be stored in presets
Multi-wave selection for modulation and Ring Mod
Low pass Filter for Ring Mod and single side band modes
Fine and depth control for frequency select and amount
Tune switch to adjust frequency to your pitch
Upper and lower sideband isolation
High quality whammy style effects with expression pedal
Pitch shifting with pitch modulation and vibrato
You won't believe the amazing melodic sounds that are capable in this killer effects pedal until you order it for yourself.

I was looking for a Ring Modulator to get some Jeff Beck style sounds, but I thought it was not worth investing in a pedal just for that specific effect. Ring Modulators are usually expensive and it's the kind of effect I would use only sometimes. When I saw the video reviews about this new product from Electro Harmonix I was impressed with their range of possibilities. And using the pedal I was even more impressed, because it still does much more than what is shown in the videos. With this pedalboard friendly unit I can get the same Ring Modulator that is available in EHX Frequency Analyzer, besides the best Pitch Shifter I've ever had in pedal. Before it I used the Boss PS-5 and I can guarantee that the Ring Thing has a much higher quality. Effect clear, transparent and without the little delay that I had in the notes with the PS-5. It also does an excellent Chorus effect by using the Pitch Shifter in detune setting. The modes and knob adjustments are very sensitive and give many possibilities such as phaser, and vibe effects, all with good quality! And the best is that with all those possibilities you still have 9 presets to save your favorite settings! If you are interested in pedals like Line 6 MM-4, Boss PS-5, Digitech Whammy, EHX Frequency Analyzer, I think this will supply almost everything you have with the others in a single unit and sound quality better than most of them!
Electro-Harmonix Ring Thing Modulator Guitar Effects Pedal
.This can do detune, ring modulation, chorus, tremolo, sub-octave, and rotary like sounds. I mainly use it for the Lower Band Modulator for an extremely slow oscillator speed to add an analog texture to my sound. Effects can range from subtle to spacey sounds. Tons of fun to be had and more to come. I recommend this pedal for experimental music makers and non-experimental players as well.
Electro-Harmonix Ring Thing Modulator Guitar Effects Pedal
.This is one of the most versitle pedals I have ever owned. I would highly recommend this pedal for anyone thinking about taking their playing to a entirely diffrent level.
Electro-Harmonix Ring Thing Modulator Guitar Effects Pedal
.I love everything about this pedal. It's analog, very warm and organic-sounding. I had considered several other options while looking for something new to open creative doors for me, and I absolutely made the right choice with the Ring Thing. I will be buying more EH pedals.
This pedal is easy to use and has tons of sound options. You can do everything from familiar vibe, rotary, and phase shifter sounds, to crazy bell tones, robotic weirdness, and beautiful orchestral textures. I'm having a blast with this pedal.
Very good build and intuitive layout. The status LEDs are easy to see.
With the nine presets this is like having nine pedals in one, but there are way more than nine cool sounds on this gem. This pedal is well worth the money.
Electro-Harmonix Ring Thing Modulator Guitar Effects Pedal
.This is a ridiculously versatile little pedal. It does a lot more than ring modulation - it can achieve phase, chorus, tremolo, pitch shift, and some truly strange effects. I particularly liked that you can set the nine presets to your own creations. With an expression pedal this is even wilder and more impressive - you can use it like a Whammy pedal, and much more. Just an amazing little device. Excellent quality sound. The only downside is a very steep learning curve - you really are going to need to sit down and fiddle with knobs for a long while to get the best sounds out of it. The knobs are each very very sensitive and a micro-turn in either direction can change an entire setting in a big way. Take your time, be patient, and save a sound if you like it - you can always change it later, but you might not be able to find it later! A wonderful pedal, for the sonic adventurer and practicing musician both. A+
Electro-Harmonix Ring Thing Modulator Guitar Effects Pedal
.This is not for creating organic guitar sounds. What it does is create odd, metallic sounds and it doubles as a whammy pedal. It does have a modulation input which can be interesting in the studio.
Before buying this pedal check youtube and be sure it's what you need. It does things that nothing else will but to me they fall more in the sound FX arena than the normal guitar world. I definitely don't regret buying the pedal but I did buy a POG2 a week after I got this...
Electro-Harmonix Ring Thing Modulator Guitar Effects Pedal
.Like most pedals, this one takes 9v negative tip external power using the standard connector. Unlike most pedals, it does not take a battery.
The owner's guide states right on the cover that it requires 190 mA. That's a lot for a pedal. This is not a problem at all in a home studio, which is probably the most common application. But it is a consideration if you want to put it on your pedal board.
My pedal board has a built-in power supply which supplies 100 mA per lead. This is typical. Unfortunately that's not enough to drive this pedal. (I tried it anyway - no go.) Fortunately the power supply on the pedal board also has a few 120v outlets on it, so a wall wart fixed the problem.
(Side note: my board is an SKB PS-45, which has 120v outlets, but I believe the newer PS-55 does not.)
Other than that I have nothing to add to the other comments. Great pedal, but I docked it a point for being finicky.
