As soon as I pulled the bass out of the box I noticed the beautiful Matte Black finish which really stands out. Then I noticed the typical ESP quality construction. I own 5 ESP LTD basses and none are lacking in quality. BTW, I own 17 basses ranging from ESP/LTD, Schecter, BC Rich, Dean, and 2 Sterling Ray 34's and have owned in the past Ibanez, Jackson, Fender etc, so I know a good quality bass and I know a bad quality bass. Next I strapped it on and found it very well balanced, no neck dive. So far so good, next I played it acoustically and found it sounded beautiful. Finally I plugged it in and that is when the disappointment hit. The bass is passive with only 1 tone control knob and all I could get from it was a bright high midrange distorted sound. No matter how much knob turning I did, it just plain sounded horrible. I literally had to scoop out all the mids on my amp to get a decent sound and this is coming from a guy who likes midrange. So I now have 2 options, send it back and get a refund or add an active preamp. Since I got it on sale during the 4th of July weekend, I decided to use the money I saved and purchased an EMG BTC Control preamp. Excellent decision, I now have full deep bass and crystal clear highs with total control over my tone. I went from almost returning it to now owning a very nice bass. My guitarist and singer both say that if Batman played bass, this would be the one. I am now very happy with it, but if you are not looking at investing more money into it, I would not recommend this bass. The tone is a major turnoff, even if you play metal and like distortion. There is just no bottom end at all until now. I play AC/DC, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and even Slayer and would not be able to pull it off with this bass without the EMG BTC Control. If possible, try before you buy.
