To know Paul Reed Smith is to know a man who is always pushing the proverbial envelope. His persistent desire to explore and discover is a huge part of PRS Guitars. So, when Paul and the R&D team ramped up their dissection and testing of pickups a couple years ago, it became very clear very quickly that something new was about to be born. Enter PRS 58/15 and 85/15 pickups “ both introduced for PRS™ 30th Anniversary year.
This limited run is a culmination of various features from the Custom 24 over the past 30 years and built around the more vintage-voiced 58/15 pickups, which have exceptional clarity and focused midrange. Paul describes them as, "very consistent, best-of™ PAF-style pickups. Other unique appointments on these instruments include solid shell bird inlays (similar to those found on Paul' Pre-Factory and early production guitars), a preview of the new headstock signature inlay, and the Gen III PRS patented tremolo.
The 58/15 limited run will total 150 pieces worldwide: 50 of each color, 25 of each color having a Pattern Regular neck carve with Solid Shell œBlue Purple Red Abalone Bird inlays and 25 having a Pattern Thin neck carve with Solid Shell œDark Special Red Abalone Bird inlays.
Gen III Tremolo
Rest assured, the Gen III trem functions in all the same ways as the PRS patented tremolo system always has. As always, the bridge is machined brass, a metal that rings beautifully. The block, intonation screws, height-adjustment screws, and the string slots on the saddles are all left un-plated for increased sustain and fidelity of tone.
The mounting screw holes are countersunk from underneath, creating a knife-edge set-up that ensures the bridge will return to pitch after use.
The bridge' sidewalls create a pocket that keeps the six individually adjustable saddles from moving sideways, thereby eliminating another traditional cause of tuning instability.
The saddles feature a compound radius so that the string breaks across the saddle at the optimum angle for contact and vibration transfer through the bridge. The Private Stock Gen III Trem also features locking saddles. These saddles hold the ball ends in place preventing any movement in the block and further ensuring the guitar returns to pitch after use.
The tremolo arm is unthreaded and features a small set screw that allows the player to customize the feel of the arm and find a comfortable playing position.
The mounting screws have been redesigned with larger thread and a larger custom head. This added mass creates more contact from the screw to the bridge and the guitar' body, resulting in greater sustain.
Grooves have been added to the bridge plate. The grooves are radiused to match the radius of the height adjustment screws, again so there is more contact and a better fit.
