The Backstage emulates the sound, high output, warmth and "push back" of tube amplifiers and includes features such as high and low EQ controls, a 6" heavy-duty speaker, switchable TransTube overdrive, a tape/CD input for jamming along to your favorite songs and a headphone input for doing so quietly. The key is Peavey's exclusive TransTube technology, which emulates the sound of tube amplifiers without the hassle or cost of dealing with unpredictable tubes. The TransTube preamp tailors the gain level for any amount of drive, from clean to crunch to scream, using a patented approach to emulating 12AX7 tubes and their ability to create even, harmonic distortion. It also mimics the "push back" response of real tube circuitry, which is essential to emulating tube dynamics, distortion and chime.

Bought this and the little Marshall MG10CF at the same time and have the little (smallest) Fender that is slightly cheaper than these and some other little practice amps as well, both tube and solid state. While this Backstage II (always loved the original Backstage...a classic) looks sub par IMHO it beats all of them for tone. The Peavey and Marshall are both the same price and both worked perfectly out of the box and do what they are supposed to. The Marshall MG10CF looks the best of the three BTW. Anyway this Peavey has a 'faux tube' circut and it actually impresses me and sounds sorta tube like...creamy and thicker tone. It has become my go-to little practice amp. The Peavey has a cheaper build to it (open back)...the Marshall again is more substantial and looks impressive. This being said both amps are nice and impressive.
