Using the same algorithm as Electro-Harmonix's popular V256 Vocoder with Reflex Tune, the Iron Lung Vocoder presents the musician with a 256-band dedicated vocoder that delivers aggressive and fluid access to vocal manipulation. Aside from being world class in sound, the Iron Lung presents tonal controls to make fine-tuned adjustments for aggressive and articulate harmonic emphasis. The Gender Bender control allows the player/singer to adjust the tonal character to be more female in character when advanced to the right and to have a more male tonality when adjusted to the left. The Tone control adds adjustable definition and brightness to the overall tone. An XLR connection is provided for your microphone of choice and the selectable 3-position switch matches your selected microphone for the perfect balance.

I picked up one of these so that I can perfrom some of my songs that were recoreded with a vocoder in a live performance. It sounds very good when you get it dialed in. This can be tricky. If the other sound source is too loud it will overwhelm the voice inflection. If you turn up the gain on the Iron Lung too high it will feedback quite easily.
It takes practice to be clearly intelligible. I've found that I need to enunciate certain words quite differently. Really hitting the hard consonants and exagerating "S" and "SH" sounds.
I think the main weakness of this box is the gain. It only has a 3 way switch for high, med and low gain. I often find that the med setting is not quite enough, but high is instant feedback!
Another note, I find that if I "eat the mic" it sounds terrible. I get a much better result if I back off and sing louder. I think the bass freqs in my voice overwhelm the vocoder circuit. (I have a deep voice, but I am actually talking about proximity effect inherent in all cardiod microphones.)
This is a good box, but I think I will try the bigger brother next.

.I was hoping that a vocoder would expand my vocal expressiveness, but this didn't do it for me. When there is signal going though the pedal and you speak, all you hear is the sound of the instrument and very little intonation that could be considered a voice. The tone and pitch also do little to change the overall effect that this pedal produces. I am a fan of Electro-Harmonix pedals, but I was very disappointed with this purchase.

.I just got this baby today. I ordered it simply because I wanted to 'make my guitar talk' like Joe Walsh, Frampton,etc. without the tubing and hassle of an ordinary talk box. This thing is small, but gets the job done. I was able to take it out of the box, plug it into the amp, plug my guitar and mic up, and start talking. Then, I started messing with the sound. The Gender Bender is pretty much just a pitch shifter, but it can really spice up the sound, and the tone is ... well ... it's just tone. But as a whole, I would recommend this product to anyone. It's an affordable, easy to use Vocoder that you'll never want to stop using!
