I tried several fuzz pedals (including almost the entire EHX BigMuff product line) to get the best BMP style fuzz for my style of playing and when I came across this pedal, I instantly fell in love.
The price is right. The versatility of the tone and wicker switches makes for myriad of not just usable but excellent tones, from the vintage to the extreme. The smaller footprint makes it much more portable and pedalboard friendly, which is a huge advantage over the Russian and USA vintage styles and the sound (in my opinion) outshines the Little BMP. It is a BigMuff by all means, so if you're looking for that tone, look no further. If you want a Tone Bender or Fuzz Face style fuzz, you're in the wrong place. If you want a smoother, more "Russian' tone, go for the green bass version; same size, more Sovtek tone.
Most importantly, take some time to tweak the settings with your gear and you'll be in heaven.

.In the 12 years I've been playing music, I have owned four different big muffs. A few years ago I started fronting my own band, playing guitar (as opposed to bass), and I found myself relying heavily on the old black Russian-made Big Muff I bought back in the 90s. The sound was right, but the pedal was poorly constructed (as many users of this pedal can surely attest to) and I had constant issues with reliability. The starndard NYC issue of the pedal solves the reliability problem, but I've never entirely dug the sound. Where the Russian Muff is raw and untamed, the American model seems restrained and a bit too refined for my preferences.
This is where the new Tone Wicker model comes in. With the tone switched on and the wicker off, you have the standard USA Muff. Switch off the tone, and all of the sudden this thing is a beast. You get so much more gain, and the full spectrum of your tone to work with. I found it utterly perfect for the sound I wanted, which is sort of a 90s Weezer wall of guitar sound. To those who criticize the tone bypass, it's important to understand what exactly it does. Switching off the tone knob basically adds a transparency that may or may not flatter your sound. If your clean sounds good, this pedal will sound good. If your clean sounds ugly, it's going to make that ugliness louder. I prefer a good clean sounding tube amp with minimal eq adjustments, and I use primarily the bridge pickup. The results have been fantastic.

I'm so glad I tried it on store before I purchased it.
Don't get me wrong, as I have stated above I use Electro-Harmonix and Tech 21 effects EXCLUSIVELY. So I'm not shy to tell Electro-Harmonix to go back to work and make a better version of this pedal.
It's not alright to expect musicians to be so careful about a single switch that can damage expensive equipment.
I honor the idea though.
I got the Little Big Muff and am happy with it, even though I cannot take off my mind the great tones I could get with this Big Muff with Toine Wiker. What a bummer.
I use Electro-Harmonix and Tech 21 effects EXCLUSIVELY, so I am biased in favor of this company.
This pedal is probably meant to a broader audience then the origina Big Muff.
I compared it with the Little Big Muff.
I tried it with a Mexican Stratocaster and a Peavey Classic 50/212.
When the tone switch is off, it gives a much stronger and bolder distortion then the Little Big Muff.
Even though I prever the tonal capabilities of this pedal over thre Little Big Muff, I got the Little Big Muff instead. Here is why.
Let me state what some Electro Harmonix employees have surely stated already. I think the engineers did a sloppy job on the interface.
You have to be VERY careful when turning the tone switch off.
I played with the tone knob to compare with the Original Big Buff and it gives a sleek muff sound.
Now when I switched the tone off, it was hair raising. A gain of about 30 db, enough to blow any equipment at high volume.
Even though the sound is awesome when the tone switch is off, the sustain doesn't seem to make any difference anymore, but YOU HAVE TO TURN THE VOLUME DOWN BEFORE YOU PLAY WITH THE TONE SWITCH, otherwise YOU WILL DAMAGE YOUR PRECIOUS EQUIPEMENT.

.First off, this is a good pedal, and I'm keeping it. It's a radical muff sound that I already strongly associate with a song I wrote. The bad news is that you should just get the original. I'm not sure who came up with the tone wicker, but I don't like it. Turning off the tone is definitely an 'unabated tonal slam' as described, but you don't want it. The thing sounds by far the best when used with the tone on and the wicker off. Then it's radical, but there was just no room for improvement on the original Big Muff. At least you can select it so that you basically have the original. It's a waste of $10 to buy the Pi incarnation IMO. If they could improve this thing for me, I'd say to make it work as a booster. It's a nice clean-channel-only effect, but it would have been cool if it worked also as a dirty-channel booster. Instead, it is just an instant squeel as soon as you get the button down. That's being choosey though because it makes a righteous noise when used on a clean tube amp.

.Can't say much that hasn't been said already. What I can say after using this pedal for a year is that it is the best bigmuff out there. It's all about the tone wicker. To me it's like a vintage bigmuff switch. you flip it and holy dancing cows instant grit and velcro-like-texture fuzziness. you combo this with the right tube amp and Wallah! Siamese Dream tone. Cool thing is, costs much much less what you'd pay for a vintage (banged-unreliable-overpriced-oversized) V4-V5 bigmuff.
Careful with the tonebypass, the thing is a 30db volume boost. good for saturated tubes I guess. in my opinion, it's as useless as it was 30 years ago in the V3 or V5 pedals. it does sement this version as a definitive throwback. both switches are there for a reason, EHX knew it, I know it and now you know it.
(funny story: Custom Guitarsfriend sensors the word MxUxFxF. cannot use it in the review or tags, yeah, it's a dirty woord to 'em. They did allow EHX to put it on the title though!)

.Sweet, sweet pedal. I tried virtually every fuzz on the market from Dwarfcraft, Devi Ever, MXR, Zvex and even the Big(Censored)PI. While all the others are great for their intended use this one just sounded right to my ears. The Big (Censored) Pi sound can be had with this pedal but it offers more versatility as far as tone shaping. It also does a fair amount of cleaning up when you roll off the guitar volume.

. If you're looking for a pedal that is on par with the rest of the little 9 volt powered hand sized stomp boxes out there, then it's fine. If you're looking for why Electro-Harmonix became famous in the first place, and want to know why some of their stuff is worshiped, and feel the power that David Gilmour felt and used all over Animals and The Wall, then buy the older stuff used or try to find new old stock! For someone like me, who has a nice little collection of pre "XO" boxes, this new stuff is just a total disappointment. A lot of their stuff has even been dumbed down to 9 volts...stuff that used to be 18 and 24 volts. That just goes to show that EHX has now jumped on the bandwagon of dumbed down, less than perfect, cheaply made pedals. It's a shame because I think that a lot of people who have been with EHX for a long time, enjoyed the 24 volt power cords and transformers built in, with the huge headroom, and sweet/succulent tone that EHX circuits used to have....They used to have magic...now they have the XO BMP with Tone Wicker.
This pedal is packed with lots of cool and useable features, especially for a big muff. The Tone Wicker is really cool, and helps cut through the mix when playing in a band/live situation. I was actually not a huge fan of the sound with the "Tone" switched off. It gets obnoxiously loud and the sound thins out a lot. The main problem with this pedal is the groud spring that is mounted to the circuit board and pushes up againsted the wall of the pedal (on the inside of the pedal.) Since this is supposed to be the ground for the circuit, there is a problem because there is a lot of greyish paint on the inside of the pedal, and that spring is not able to create a sufficient enough ground. When I first purchased this pedal, I though there was something wrong with it because it was so noisey. All I did to fix this was scrape and sand the area of the wall that this grounding touches. That being said, I give this an "8" because there are a lot useable features for this Big Muff.
Not impressed. See, I own a ton of vintage, '90s, and '00s Electro Harmonix pedals. All I can say is that I'm actually a bit disappointed and even a bit depressed about the overall direction that Electro-Harmonix is taking. The quality is NOT bad....it's just not what it used to be or anywhere close. The only thing that is better is the strenght of the Diecast "XO" boxes. That being said, I even prefer the old tin can boxes that they used to come in.
For the price of this pedal, it's great.

.I got this pedal by accident when I ordered a regular Big Muff Pi USA reissue (from a different website of course...)I was tempted to send it back and but since I only paid for the regular Muff and got this one with the option to take the tone knob out of the picture and add the wicker feature for some high end goodness I decided to keep it. Although they say with the tone on and the wicker off the circuit is the same as the regular Big Muff, I can still hear a slight difference with the regular Big Muff being a touch warmer sounding. That being said, it still sounds great and with the tone out and wicker on, paired with a TS9 or a TS808 this thing sounds amazing, I'm glad I didn't send it back.

.What a fool I have been.......... Went through dozens and dozens of pedals looking for that delicious liquid sustain of Hendrix, Santana, Gilmour and over looked the obvious. This is the real deal. A must have for your pedal board. The wicker and the tone bypass functions are just icing on the cake.

.Awesome! Tone off, Wicker on. Thats all you need to know. With the tone off it cleans up the sound enough that you can actually use it for something other than a blanket of mush. If you are into the Silversun Pickups tone look no further. The best part is its so versitle, it can go right back to the original sound as well!
