The Electro-Harmonix Superego Synth Engine effects pedal is a new and unique product that combines elements of sampling, synthesis and infinite sustain. The Superego allows you to freeze sound, gliss between frozen tones, layer sounds and place an external effects loop on only the effect. In addition, the Superego can detect new notes or chords and sustain them automatically without requiring you to step on the footswitch. It even lets you tweak attack and decay, or use its effects loop to invent novel synth patches.
The Superego has three modes: Latch, Momentary and Auto. A toggle switch at the center of the Superego chooses between the three. Momentary mode is not labeled in the artwork; it is the center (or eye) position of the 3-position toggle switch.

when Moog released the MOOG guitar a few years ago, I thought "OH well, another expensive piece of gear I can not afford." This does not encompass everything the Moog does, but it does accomplish the sound I was searching for, namely infinite sustain. The unit allows a player the ability to add notes on top of another to create a large droning chord. It also has a mode to have notes cancel each other in succession as new notes are played. I especially like to run effects after the signal path(and some before it) to see how many new sounds I can get. EH has been adding memory slots on some of their newer units. Perhaps a dozen or so slots to store sounds would improve an already great product. This is a lot cheaper in price than a Moog guitar, but encompasses some it's attibutes.

.It requires a hot signal to initiate the effect. Pick players (guitar/bass) will have better luck. Bass finger players will have to dig in pretty hard. If you play with varying physical dynamic range, soft touch to hard, you may find you have to refine your style when using this effect. I play extended range bass and it works best for me immediately after my floor preamp and before the EH Epitome and Line6 M13. The floor preamp levels the signal output so the unit responds more predictably. Note: THE EFFECTS LOOP DOES NOT FUNCTION UNLESS THE UNIT IS ENGAGED. I knew this before buying, it was in the online user instructions. I had to try it anyway and it is true. Once familiar with the controls, one can get wonderful sounds. Not bad at polyphonic playing either.

.This pedal is perfect for the jamming lead soloist that is looking for that extra body to their overall tone. Many youtube demos feature guys playing David Gilmour style solos over top of resonating sustained chordal tones which is perfect for any lead ins or song transitions. I have used it live with a fellow guitarist who sings and plays rhythm and found it a perfect way of adding a little body to round out the overall sound. Playing mostly lead myself, it is very easy to change keys and keep soloing at the same time while on the fly. I primarily use the first (far left setting) to latch and keep that steady tone, but found the auto (far right) useful for some unique recording tones. The middle setting is a temporary hold, I honestly never use it. The control knobs are dummy proof and blending your clean and effect volumes is flawless. A very clean pedal I must say and I use it at the end of my pedal train. (BOSS ME-70 -> BOSS loop station->Superego). Unlike some boutique pedal, this one comes with its own power source which is relatively small on your power strip. Overall lightweight but durable construction. A great find and I'm looking forward to years of use!
Electro-Harmonix Superego Synth Guitar Effects Pedal
.Great sounding pedal! I have it routing through a stereo right signal to sit underneath my guitars primary chain. I use a cheapo multi effects processor in the effects loop to generate different sounds with chorus, phaser, flanger, etc... The Auto mode is a bit touchy and requires a forceful pluck/strum to engage. I tried a boost in front of it and got better results. All in all I am pleased with the additional tones I can create. If you are into ambient soundscapes this unit (with the addition of a chain in the effects loop) can really generate a fine texture. Drone on!

.I liked the effects and impressive sounds; however
the access to some of the sustain requires using
the footswitch while playing. This isn't the most
user friendly pedal in that it requires constant
foot pedal touching to acquire the desired sound.
The 'auto' mode is just ok! Maybe good to use in
home studio for added effect while practicing. Too
busy to use in gig setting!
Electro-Harmonix Superego Synth Guitar Effects Pedal
.Great pedal, at dryer settings it adds depth to my tone that iv been looking for. At real wet settings it can be kind of hard to reign in but once you dial it in it sings. As always the freeze technology is insane.

.Takes the freeze pedal to the next level, I've already used it to create a drone on a mix. It works best if you add some modulation effects in the loop or after the pedal and, of course, reverb and/or delay. The loop out allows you to send the drone to a separate effects chain/amp and play over it through your main amp. Some good videos on youtube so watch them after you order yours...
