Advertising and Marketing Manager Duties

Advertising, promotions, and marketing managers plan programs to generate interest in products or services. These jobs work with art directors, sales agents, and financial staff.

  • Work with heads of departments or staff to discuss budgets, contracts, marketing plans, and advertising media items
  • Plan promotions and advertising campaigns
  • Plan radio, television, print, online media, and billboard advertisements
  • Negotiate contracts of advertising

Advertising managers create interest among buyers of a product / service for a department. They work in agencies that put together promotion campaigns for clients, in media firms that sell advertising space or time, and in orgs that advertise pretty heavily.

Advertising managers work with sales staff to generate ideas and thoughts for an advertising campaign. They may oversee staff that develop advertising. They work with the finance to prepare budgets or the advertising campaign.

They serve as liaisons between the client requiring the advertising and a promotion agency that develops and places ads. In larger businesses different advertising management may oversee in house accounts and creative and media services departments.

In addition, some managers specialize in a particular field or type of advertising. For ex:, media directors determine the way in which an ad campaign reaches its customers. They can use any of various media, including radio, TV, news, magazines, the Internet, and signs that are outdoor. 

Advertising Managers also known as account executives manage client accounts.

Promotions Managers direct programs that combine advertising with purchasing to increase overall sales. The programs use direct mail, newspaper inserts, Internet ads, in store displays, product endorsements, or events to target customers. Purchasing incentives can include discounts, samples, gifts, rebates, coupons, or contests.

Marketing Managers estimate demand for products that an organization and its competitors offer. They will identify potential markets for the companies products.

Because the work of advertising, promotions, and marketing managers directly affects revenue, they typically work closely with executives of a company. These jobs can be stressful, particularly near deadlines. They may travel and meet with clients or representatives of communications departments.

Most advertising, promotions, and marketing managers work full time. About 2 in 5 advertising and promotions managers worked greater than 40 hours per week in 2012.

How To Become an Advertising or Promotions Manager

A bachelor’s degree is required for most of these positions. These managers typically have work experience in advertising, marketing, sales, and promotions.

Education

A bachelors degree is required for most advertising, promotions, and marketing management positions. For advertising management positions, some employers typically prefer a degree in advertising or journalism. Course of study might include marketing, consumer behavior, market research, sales, communication methods and technology, visual arts, art history, and photography.

Most marketing managers have bachelors degree. Courses in business law, management, economics, finance, computer science, and statistics may help gain employment. For ex:, courses in computer science are helpful in developing an approach to maximize traffic through online search results.  This can be critical for digital ads and promotions.

Work Experience in a Related Occupation

These positions typically have work experience in advertising, marketing, promotions, or sales. For ex:, many managers are former sales representatives, purchasing agents, buyers, or product, advertising, promotions, or public relations specialists.

The median annual earnings for marketing managers was $119,480 in 2012. The lowest 10 % earned less than $62,650, and the top 10 % earned more than $187,200. Most work full time. In 2012, about 2 in 5 advertising ad promotions managers worked more than 40 hours per week.
